About This Material

Summary

This toolkit introduces students to digital literacy. The toolkit consists of six chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Introduction to Digital Literacy
  • Chapter 2: Modes of Digital Communication
  • Chapter 3: Understanding Digital Citizenship
  • Chapter 4: Critical Approaches to Digital Literacy
  • Chapter 5: Developing Evaluative Literacy Skills
  • Chapter 6: Joining the Digital Conversation

Competency

This modules in this toolkit support the following:

  • Information literacy by helping students think critically about how information is produced, prioritized, and presented
  • Communication, collaboration, and digital scholarship by helping students build confidence when contributing to digital conversations
  • Digital scholarship by helping students be comfortable as scholars in online learning environments and learn how to find, organize, interpret, analyze, and communicate information in digital spaces
  • Digital well-being by understanding how to create and manage their online identities for their mental health

How to use

Each chapter includes activities. For example, Chapter 1 has three activities, the first of which is titled, “Thinking About Your Digital Self.??? Chapter 1 also includes an opportunity for learners to reflect on their digital footprint.

Chapter 2 contains a case study on the role of media coverage in the civil rights movement and a self-assessment activity on digital device use.

Instructors will find easy-to-use or adapt activities in each chapter of this very user-friendly toolkit.

Audience

Adult basic education and undergraduate level

Outcome

Working through the whole toolkit, learners will learn how to find and evaluate information, think critically about the production of digital content, protect their privacy and digital identity, and understand what it means to become an active and responsible participant in conversations online — all skills necessary to be a good digital citizen.
